21 days and counting

Winter Solstice happens on Sunday, 22 December 2019,  at 04:19 GMT.   It is always an eagerly awaited event at Bag End - the turning of the Wheel as our tiny little lump of rock starts her journey back towards light and warmth.  This year even more so because I am keen to see the back of 2019, an Annus Horribilis if ever there was one.  To shamelessly plagiarise Her Majesty in 1992:

"2019 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure"

December has arrived with much nicer manners than November ever managed to display, freezing temperatures forgiven thanks to the clear, bright light that has flooded into the house today, nicely illuminating cobwebs, dusty corners and windows that definitely need an inside clean and polish.

In the Coppice, Mahonia "media Charity" has started to bloom its little heart out.

We 'celebrated' by moving an awful lot of stuff and cleaned every single carpet and rug in the house.  It is a job we try and do twice a year, although in truth it sometimes only happens once.  The carpets dry very quickly and with everything put back where it belongs the house is all clean and smiley, and I can get some **Christmas** decorations out as and when I feel like it.

**  It's December - "C" word is obligatory!

A quick bit of astonomising before the inevitable collapse.  Screenshot courtesy of the brilliant SkySafari:

I got to see the Moon (obviously!), Saturn and Venus but Jupiter was too close to the horizon and Pluto was too faint.  No imaging, I was balanced on the seat of the arbor with my head stuck through the horizontal trellis!

We are now thoroughly cream-crackered, so it is catch-up telly and the woodburner for me, and some screen time for him.

  1. You have been busy - our house desperately needs a major blitzing but a combination of boys coming and going, me working inside rather that in the studio and a general housework apathy hasn't helped. xxx Here is to the turning of the wheel and the new season - here is to Winter Solstice - which like you, we will be celebrating xx

    1. Kate, if you had seen some of the dust bunnies unearthed this morning you would need to find a whole new definition for housework apathy!

  2. Wow, cleaning carpets counts as a major accomplishment ...I avoid it, whine about it, and create utter chaos when I do manage to do it ... then I see the nice results and wish I did it more willingly and more often- I am hoping 2020 is a far better year too ... I'm deciding about some major changes to turn my back on what has been a less-than-delightful year- I'm just back from a couple of weeks visiting children/g'children so that has been a good and early jump on things-
the usual fond wishes your way-I look forward to your beautiful pics- take care-

    1. Believe me Barb, I'm no Martha Stewart {grin}, but as you point out, the results are worth it. Good to see you back, and good luck with the changes you are considering - 2019 was annus horribilis for you too 💚

  3. When you have finished your house could you come and start on mine. Or maybe we could start a housework apathy club, it is not that I loathe it just would rather be doing something else. We were outside this evening the sky was beautiful wasn't it and the moon so bright. Hope you enjoyed putting your feet up this evening.

    1. Hi Mum, just waiting for the email inviting me 🤗 It was like a spring clean but a few months late, and like you, we would both have preferred to be doing something else :-)

  4. Dear Jayne
I am enjoying December (so far) too - even if we're only one day in. I found November dull, grey, wet and depressing. Here's to the solstice, when the evenings start to get lighter and things seem just that little bit better.
    Best wishes

    1. Absolutely right Ellie, December is OK so far! Another freezing night last night so I won't be cleaning my car this morning . . .

  5. Busy bee Jayne!! I love the frosty flower pics & can imagine how lovely that mahonia must smell. All that cleaning deserves a night time rest & your woodburner is what we need tonight, but the central heating is getting a late year workout, so we are keeping warm with another few days of this silly wintry weather. Take care & huggles.

    1. Thank you Susan. It is a little too early in the season for the mahonia to have developed scent, that usually comes in January/February.

  7. Your pics of nature are so beautiful! The one that I like the very best is your first one! Love and miss her gorgeous face. I agree about the end of 2019. It was awful! 2020 may not be much better. My Maisie has arthritis in her hips and the tumors on her rear are growing back. I will not put her thru another surgery since she's around 12 or 13 years old. It's going to be hard.

    1. Thanks Pattie. I am so sorry to read about Maisie, but she is blessed that you have HER best interests at heart, and that you will put her quality of life ahead of your own sadness, xx 🐶💚

A friend said recently of 2019: "we've had years like that, when we have stayed up just to make sure the damn thing has gone". I won't stay up, but I will check on 1st January to make sure 2019 is no more.

  8. Can I join your housework apathy club please? I hate doing my own and will usually find something else 'more important' to do :-) It's got to be done this week though as Michael is bringing his girlfriend over to stay for Christmas and New Year. I love the garden photos but needless to say my favourite is the first one.

    1. Well, if Michael bringing L. over for the holidays is not "important enough" I don't know what is {{big grin}}.
