Blogger comment notification

I don't complain when Blogger gets all messed up because that would be churlish in the extreme - for ten years I have had a free, relatively easy to use platform which supports my words, photos and general messing around.  But as all bloggers know, comments matter and I think it is nice to reply to each one;  I guess I am old enough that it is the digital equivalent of writing 'thank you letters' for all your presents at Christmas and birthday time!

The last couple of months have been irritating in that the much valued emails advising me someone was thoughtful enough to spend a few minutes of their time leaving a comment had completely vanished.  I had to keep revisiting published posts and having a look to see if there was anything new, not the end of the world but a waste of time when there weren't any!  This morning I decided to Google the problem (not for the first time) and managed to find a solution, which - so far - is working.   In it's simplest terms, Blogger have now changed the system so that you have to sign up to confirm you want to receive comment notification - yes, even when you're the blog author, owner and general Supreme Head of Everything.

I suspect this is another GDPR spin-off . . .

It is remarkably easy to fix;  this forum post has info, but is a bit more long-winded that a couple of friends might like (you know who you are, xx).  So here is my version:

You need to be at the Blogger Dashboard page.  Quickest way there is to click the orange Blogger logo top-left of your blog.

Click on Settings, Email.
See the second option on the right, Comment Notification email?

Even if your email address is already there (which mine was) still do this:
Click on "Choose from Contacts",  find your own email address - if it is not there, leave that page for a moment, go to your Contacts Manager whether that's Google or Apple, and add yourself to your Address Book.  Once you have saved your new entry, go back to "Choose from Contacts" (you might have to 'cancel' and then go back to it again to refresh the listing).

Add yourself, and then very important, click on the big orange "Save settings" box top right.  Switch over to your email, and as soon as you get an email from Blogger inviting you to receive Comment Notifications, click on the "Subscribe" link in it.

And for me - that was it, comment notification emails started up again immediately.  Phew.

A final note of caution though.   If you are in the habit of replying to blog comments by email, with the new system you will likely fail - and get no notification that you've failed.   From info on various forums and what I've received in the last day,  it looks as if every notification message will come from the dreaded "no-reply" email, and the person you think you are writing to will never receive it unless you change the address.  So if you don't know their personal email address, the only (and frankly simplest) way to respond is on your blog in the comments section.

  1. Great post, I always know any comments as I have my blog set so the comments do not show until I have read them, this helps with spam and the occasional troll.

    1. Thanks Marlene. Glad you have a system which works for you.

  2. It is most definitely the GDPR's doing - because you have to give permission to everything and everyone to see your details, they had to stop the sharing of info via email as in essence it was passing of a readers details via a third party without theirs or your specific confirmation - so it was easier to stop doing it, set up a new form of permission and start again. I wonder if the bigwigs that started all this nonsense knew what the fall-out would be?? Probably not - it was rushed through with such haste and no thought or finesse that subsequently everyone however big or small were considered to be potential information hacks, trolls and blackmailers - what jolly good fun (not...)
On a more pleasant note - we have had a bit more rain and my garden has been doing a merry jig and burst into song. As have the weeds and the lawn (note to self - find lawnmower..) xxx

    1. Like all major change (and some minor ones too) the fall out and wider implications are never thought through. Management used to tell some horrific tales of projects he'd seen go off the rails because people involved did not want to sit down and think through the big picture AND the details.

Rain here too. Plants and soil (and Gardener!) can be heard making quite delighted "sqqquuueeeeeee!!!!" noises :)

  3. I had this problem and did the same thing after browsing forums but it would have been good if Blogger had told us rather than leaving us to find out for ourselves.

    1. Thinking about it, I don;t think I get notifications when someone replies to comments that I make on their blogs now. This GDPR has caused more problems than it has solved/

    2. I don't have a problem getting notifications from other blogs, thankfully. Always make sure I tick the "notify me" box.

  4. My main email address is Yahoo and I did what you have done Jayne but now have my comment notifications delivered to my G mail account and it cured the problem, in fact I thought I had found the solution. Annoyingly though some notifications are sent to the G mail spam folder. As my blog is private it's not such a big deal with so few readers but that works well for me. Thanks for this blog post.

    1. Eileen, you can go into your spam folder, mark the emails as "not spam" and eventually you might 'train' the algorithm to recognise the messages. Glad to have helped a bit though :)

  5. Well, I failed, as I don't even know where to find my Contacts Manager! To be honest I'm not that bothered about faffing about with it - I'm not in the mood for faff of any sort at the moment - so if I want to know if I've got any comments on a particular post I just look in my 'comments awaiting moderation' section, and as I only write my Blogger blog when I've been camping I don't need to check that often. I'll note your instructions for the future though just in case I ever need them :)

    1. Ah yes, the blog you update most is Wordpress, I forgot that. Lucky break for you :)

  6. Ah, Jayne, you've lost me on this one, as I only have the blogs I want to read on my sidebar & they appear as bloggers publish their latest post. That seems to work for me & I'll keep it as such. I had too much trouble when I tried to not have it as a Google + account & have never been able to update my profile or such. Thanks for the info though. It's good to know people who are tech savvy (I'm NOT!!!). Take care.

    1. Sorry Susan, did not want to confuse you. This is about getting notification when someone has left a comment on your blog, not that a friend has published a new post on theirs.

I am definitely not particularly tech savvy . . .

I love receiving your comments, sometimes they are the only way I know I am not talking to myself . . . 😊 and I always try to respond to each and every one. So thank you.

(comments are currently moderated, I will free them from Comment Prison as soon as I see them 😱 )
