Did the earth move for you?

Up fairly early today, minding my own business with an early cup of tea and the computer when BANG!  Sounded and felt like a car had crashed into the side of the house, although my brain knew that was impossible.  I checked the freezers and solar panel inverter which are the nearest bits of 'kit' to where I was sitting but everything looked OK.  The boiler was on and the radiators warming up, so I shook my head and made a mental note to check the British Geological Survey website a bit later.

And so it is that we had a "bit of an event" at 07.33 this morning.

It beggars belief that there are still people who want to bury nuclear waste under Ennerdale, a mere 10km (6 miles) from the site of today's earthquake.

    1. Well, makes a change from complaining about the snow!

  2. I have only ever experienced one quake which woke me up as the bed was moving. Martyn was oblivious.

    1. Management heard/felt this one, and as he was still half asleep and without his hearing aids it shows how much tremor was evident.

    1. Thanks Jules, "interesting" but definitely not something I want to experience too often ☹️

  4. Idiots is too kind a word for them. Glad you're ok and nothing was damaged. How was Daisy? I've only experienced an earthquake once, thankfully and that was back in 2008. I was woken up by the bed shaking in a sort of to and fro motion, very weird.

    1. Morning K. The earthquakes I don't mind - it is the mindset that wants to bury radioactive waste in unstable ground that gets me {{shakes head . . . .}}

Daisy didn't seem to notice - but she was sound asleep buried under multiple fleecy blankets.

    1. Only lasted for a second, but I am glad we were not any closer.

  6. Glad you're ok anyway - was Daisy bothered by it?

The earth moves for me every time a bin wagon or any heavy vehicle comes along the street, it's been like that for years so if we had an earthquake round here I wouldn't know about it unless the house fell down :(

    1. Thanks Eunice, these days Daisy rarely wakes before 8.30/9.00am so either she slept through it completely, or just shrugged and buried herself deeper in the nest of blankies!

  7. It can be quite scary, when you're not sure what happened, & I know now to check the Australian Met. website when there are unexplained rumblings or doors start rattling when there is no wind. We've experienced them several times since moving to West Gippsland in 2004. Hope there is no minor damage, & beware as there can be a few over a couple of days. Take care, stay warm & huggles to all.

    1. Thanks Susan, I don't think it was the sort that you get aftershocks from but it's definitely not the first since we have been here.

  8. Seems old Blighty is becoming a bit active. The was one down here last week too. I was outside but didn’t feel a thing. Yours sounded a bit too close for comfort!

    1. Morning Jessica, didn't know you got disturbanes, but I suppose you are similarly west to us and if there is a little active fault running down the side of the UK you are as close to it as we are . . . and there was me thinking that Brexit, Trump and the ensuing global economic collapse were all we needed to worry about. ☺️

    2. D'uh - I need a spell chck - insert "disturbances" !

  9. Good grief that is scary! There was an earthquake somewhere in South Wales a couple of weeks ago. I've only felt one once when my children were small, I put my hand on the bedroom wall to steady myself and I felt the wall move.

    1. It was a bit disconcerting Eileen, but didn't last long enough to relly get me worried.
