It was all going so well . . .

Last week the decorating went so well, it looks terrific but you'll just have to use your imagination as to how nice Farrow & Ball Vert de Terre, Wimborne White and New White look together . . .

The weekend went so well during which we did virtually nothing but clean carpets (Management), re-hang curtains (Management) and position furniture, books, "stuff" and everything else (Me!)

This morning was going so well with a quick trip into town.  I planned to take Daisy to Crummock Water when I'd finished the errands, but found once home that our internet was 'down'.  Management was in the middle of a two hour conference call but spousal-shorthand refined over years of him working at home advised the connection had been gone for a couple of hours.

Long story short, our ISP went bust and pulled the plug on everyone at 9.30 this morning.  This is all Fast.co.uk have to say on their website:

If you're currently experiencing an outage with your broadband service please be advised that you will need to find an alternative broadband provider as we are unable to continue to supply your current service.

 Right, thanks . . . .

A lovely neighbour shared her Wi-Fi as Management camped in their study and tried to do some work and I made the quickest decision in the world and signed us up to a new provider - which will take ten days to activate.  In the meantime, the same lovely neighbour lent us a wireless dongle-thingy (loving this new technology!!) and Management nipped to the nearest town and came back with a data-only-SIM-thing (more new technology. . .)

Unless I physically move my iMac I've only got connectivity via the iPad and we all know that the iPad operating system and Blogger do not play nicely together.  Plain text I can manage.  Photos?  Not even going to bother.

So to answer the friends who've been wondering why it was so quiet from Bag End - we're fine thanks, just a little disconnected.  In the great big Scheme of Things, it could be much, much worse. I am not complaining, just mildly irritated.

  2. Ohhhhh! Do you still have any connection on your mobile? Hope it is all up & running by Xmas.
I'll talk as soon as it's all fixed. Take care & huggles.

    1. No, I don't use my mobile for internet, even though theoretically I could. Current activation date is 29th December, but as you can see, the stuff Management fixed up yesterday is OK for basic connectivity

    2. When I want to use my iPad to access the Internet when out of the house I connect through my mobile phone's personal hotspot using my iPad settings.

    3. Funny you should mention that Sue, because I set it up last night.

  3. Nope - my imagination isn't good enough. Pics please... :D

The terrible thing about having internet is that it's great - but is also a pain when it doesn't work. Especially when you ISP pulls the plug!

    1. Sorry Dani, not even for you. All the pictures are on my 'big' computer and it is far too much of a pain to try and deal with them via the iPad.

    1. Not one of the words we used yesterday Tess, but yes, it's really just bother. When I am away in the caravan I often like NOT having internet . . .

  5. What?! gah! Like everything these days, we all rely on them and chunter about them but when they die or in this case, the server says 'cheerio-you-are-on-your-own-now' then you are left floundering!

    1. Thanks Hawthorn, and not just 'cheerio-you-are-on-your-own-now' but "it will be ten WORKING days before your new service is activated, which, at this time of year currently means 30th December. (Yes, it has slipped a day since yesterday!)

  6. Oh, now that would just tick me off to no end!! Isn't it wonderful how they are so efficient at taking your money but when it comes to service to the paying customers, there's a disconnect. Hope you (and Mgmt) are back up and running soon. Hugs.

    1. Thanks Sue. We're meant to have regulation to prevent this sort of thing but it doesn't work :). Yes, it is a pain as the data-dongle-thingy is very slow compared to what we are used to, but I'm getting email and can do web stuff as long as I'm prepared to wait for things to load. It could be much worse . . .

  7. Noooo! I was in a pickle without my internet for 24 hours. It's amazing how much we rely on it and we don't realise just how much until we don't have it. X

    1. Hi Jules, oh I already knew how much I used the internet - too much probably, so having a pre-Christmas digital detox is not the end of the world. I can still get online to do what is absolutely necessary, but I've shelved the 'casual browsing' and you know, it's OK 🙂. But only because I know it is temporary 😊

  8. Oh no. I have never heard of the company you were with but I bet they have been taking money from your account up till they went bust. I hope you get it up and running very soon. Who are you going with? We are with Plusnet and we have been very pleased with the service as they are based in this country and very reasonably priced.

Talking about the internet. I had a phone call from a company who called themselves "Microsoft ....." A foreign "gentleman" told me that my computer was running slowly and had problems and he was calling to sort the problem out!!! I have had these calls before and played along with him just to see how far he would go with this tall tale. When I said I didn't know anything about computers (a small lie) and I only used it to skype my grand daughter he thought he was on a winner. So I asked him how could I be sure that he was genuine and why can't I take it to the local shop. He told me that I couldn't take it to a computer shop because they wouldn't be able to fix the problem and told me to go to the computer and switch on etc. That's when I put the phone down. He rang me again later but realised I had already spoken to him and put the phone down. So if you haven't had this kind of phone call before please be aware. Once into your computer they can cause all sorts of problems.

    1. Oh Catherine, I've heard of this scam but never met anyone who has actually received a call, well done to you for winding him up! I think if I ever get such a call I'll tell them I don't have a computer:) Wonder how they will respond to that.

As for our previous supplier, well, we paid a month in advance on a regular direct debit, which happened to be due just a couple of days after the collapse. Almost the first thing I did was contact the bank and cancel the instruction! Our new service will be with PlusNet - they seem to get great reviews and were extremely helpful on the phone. Apart from the 10-working-day delay (which is seems is down to Ofcom, not the ISPs) they could not have been more sympathetic. Oh, and overall I'll be reducing our monthly spend on telephony by 50%.

    2. We used to have lots of calls like this. My best wind-up was pretending that I thought that he was talking about our house windows. The conversation lasted several minutes during which time I said more ridiculous things. Even when I said,"Do you mean someone is looking through my windows and passing a disease onto my computer?" he didn't realise thar I was sending him up.

    3. LOL !!!! Well done you, wish I'd been a fly on the wall behind the scammer's desk!

  9. Glad you're ok and not tearing your hair out too much Jayne. Had I not had the internet this morning I wouldn't have a trayful of rather well done roasted vegetables. Luckily the aroma floated upstairs in time for me to rescue them! Also had a few calls from the lovely people at 'Microsoft' ,,, I just play dumb too!!
