Blogger's latest "improvement" - word verification

I've yet to find anyone who is happy with the latest Blogger "improvement" which uses very hard-to-read captcha images for word verification. Hopefully I have turned off this annoyance and Bag End friends will find it easier to leave comments.

To do the same thing on your own blog you need to be in the "old interface" (which is much simpler, another example of the Blogger goblins changing something that didn't need messing with) and go to:

-> Settings
-> Comments tab (4th one along)
Scroll down to "Show Word Verification for comments" and click "no"

and if we get spam, I've got a delete key ...

    1. You're welcome Mo. Hopefully word will spread to other blog authors but not holding out much hope of it spreading as far as the Blogger goblins who programme these things.

  2. Apparently Blogger have bought the Captcha company that creating this infernal verification so I guess we are stuck with it.

There have been loads of complaints on the Blogger forum the only response has been to get rid of the cloud. I've turned it off on my blogs too but an using moderation for now. I'll be interested to see how your letting comments through without moderation works as when I did this before I did get spam which didn't bother me (I deleted it) but it also went to any visitors who had clicked to get an email about follow-up comments and I had a complaint about this!

I've set up a poll on my blog and so far only one vote for the verification!

    1. Thanks Sue. I've also changed the "who can comment" option. It used to be Anyone, have amended it to Registered Users. If that makes it difficult for any friends I'll probably change it back

    1. Thanks Eve, yes I did receive your lovely email and will reply fully. Sorry ..... I can be rather slow in getting to "proper" emails sometimes.

  4. Oh how I HATE HATE HATE the new verification. If you search on the #* thing, the web is rife with complaints. I tried listening to the vocal verification and it's like listening to a train wreck. I get so few comments and I'm sure it's the verification that's holding visitors back. I'm going right now to turn it off and see if there is much spam backlash.

    1. Kris, you're right about the vocal option. Completely indecipherable.

    2. To enhance my protest, I'm now using Yahoo & Bing as my search engines instead of Google. If we hit them in the wallet, Google might hear us.

  6. I've just been catching up on your recent back posts and hard labour and now feel like a bone idle little baggage! :P
The pond is looking good for water skiing downhill.... can't wait to come up and try it out :) Himself is still muttering about jetties versus decking, so I'm sure he'll have some ideas by the time we get to you - I'll be emailing you in a minute with dates, so don't run away!
I've got mower envy - how about Sandra the situpon?!

  7. Dear Bilbow,
I found you via Nutty Gnomes and when I tried to comment it must have been thought transference: I had just decided to write a post about these annoying ciphers that should prove that I am not a robot - but if I were one I would need a mechanic to read those scribblings. Thank you for your help!
